CS Muturi Led a Tree Planting Drive at Got Abiero Forest, Siaya County
Friday 29, November 2024 - Siaya County
In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, Cabinet Secretary Hon. Justin Muturi spearheaded a tree planting exercise at Got Abiero Forest in Siaya County, where over 10,000 tree seedlings were planted as part of the national tree-planting initiative. This effort is in alignment with the Government's ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2030 to combat climate change and restore Kenya’s natural ecosystems.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Muturi emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective responsibility in safeguarding Kenya’s future. "This is about nurturing a greener, healthier Kenya and demonstrating the power of teamwork in environmental conservation," he said, underscoring the role of every individual and institution in realizing this monumental vision. The exercise, which brought together local and national stakeholders, was attended by Siaya County Commissioner Mr. Norbert Komora, NYS Deputy Commandant Mr. Chabari, Prof. Jackline Oduol, the CEC for Environment representing Governor James Orengo, Engineer Adriano Ouma from the Office of the Governor, Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers, and other government officials. The local residents of Got Abiero also joined hands in this vital endeavor, highlighting the community's strong commitment to preserving their natural heritage.
In a bid to ensure the long-term success of the planting initiative, the CS directed the National Youth Service (NYS) to monitor the progress of the seedlings, with monthly visits to Got Abiero Forest. This proactive approach will ensure that the young trees receive the necessary care and attention to thrive, and further reinforce the commitment to environmental stewardship at the grassroots level. This event at Got Abiero Forest is not just a one-time activity but part of a broader, sustained national effort to reverse environmental degradation and combat the effects of climate change. Through these continued efforts, Kenya is steadily working towards a greener and more sustainable future for all.
